Ratings indicate the degree of difficulty working with this species relative to other hardwoods. A '5' rating is the best. A '1' rating is the most challenging.

Also called a white walnut, butternut's narrow sapwood is nearly white and its heartwood is light brown.

It machines easily and finishes well and in many ways resembles black walnut when stained. Used for furniture, cabinets, doors and interior millwork.
